Follow – Up! Sonia Harvey went to a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in recognition of her services to EWGA as a referee and her expertise in the "Rules of Golf". She has conducted Rules quizes and seminars all over the Country for many years. For all the hard work she has put in this is a recognition well deserved. Unfortunately the Garden Party was a washout with thunderstorms and Sonia's nearest view of the Queen was the tip of her umbrella! However all was not lost, as on the previous evening she was given a guided tour of the House of Lords by Baroness May Blood – a fascinating insight into the working of the Lords which made the trip worthwhile and altogether a great experience. |

COMPETITION RULE AMENDMENTS League Matches: 1. If a Bronze player has inadvertantly come down to Silver on the day of the match: The match with the incorrect handicap should be awarded to the opponent. 2. If both teams have offended the match must be declared null & void and be re-played. 3. There should be no more than 2 temporary Greens. Gammon Trophy: If play has to be discontinued (except for lightning/flooding) competitors must complete the hole they are playing and the game continued from that point when conditions allow, even on another day. If the stoppage is due to lightning/flooding, the ball should be marked as it lies and the players leave the course immediately, for completion as above. If play starts on another day then play should start from the Tee of the hole where the match was abandoned. If any of the team members from either club are changed on a subsequent day, the whole match must be re-played from the 1st tee. All Competitions: 1. Professionals and Assistant Professionals cannot caddy for players. 2. As from 2010 only Active Handicaps will be accepted. 3. Distance Finders are not permitted. In case there are more changes, these amendments will not be added to the "Rules" on the Website until after the AGM in December. |

SWEWGA Meeting held on Monday, 15th June from Jenny Potter Mary Robson, our Handicap Adviser has a copy of a new “Rules in Action” DVD and a quiz to go with it. Any clubs that would like to borrow can contact Mary. There are plans underway for a new Centralised Handicapping database, letters inviting clubs to register will be sent out, but the exact timescale is still not known. In 2010 the funding for County Birdie squads will cease. Funding for the girls will then come from the County Golf Partnership. An additional way of raising funds to help our girls, (as they are the future members of County Squads) would be to support the ELGA Trust. All clubs were sent an entry form for the Trust Stableford Competition earlier in the year. They are still available on the EWGA website. You have to multiply the top ten scores by 2p.each and that is your clubs donation. If all clubs entered this it would raise a considerable amount for the Trust. Books of raffle tickets for an ELGA Trust Prize Draw will soon be available, the draw will take place at the EWGA AGM IN January 2010. The Australian Spoons competition (Page 154 in the EWGA handbook) has not been overly well supported in the last few years. Clubs could explore the possibility of running an Australian Spoons competition, ensuring that each club had a pair entered for the regional final. There would be nothing to stop players from playing additional rounds. It is not expensive to enter (£1 per pair per card) The SW Foursomes is at Tynmouth this year and entries are welcomed. EWGA are producing a diary, which will be available later in the year. |

COUNTY COACHING AT CARLYON BAY - 30th May with Mark Rowe This was a final short game practice for the first team squad and also for the potential second team. Mark was kept very busy as in total 14 people attended . Phil Brooks was to have been assisting but due to a serious illness in his family he was not available. Following approximately 2 hours on the practice area the girls then played the par 3 course next to the Hotel which proved very tricky and an excellent area to improve short game. Lunch of sandwiches was followed by the option to play on the main course - an opportunity that nine players took up.A very full day but the weather was too good to waste. As this was the last full coaching session this season at Carlyon Bay, County Captain Sue, would like to say a big thank you to Mark Rowe for his commitment ,(he is travelling up to Bristol & Clifton for the practice round on the 21st June), Paul Martin for the use of all the facilities and the staff in the Clubhouse particularly Mandy and also Peter Brennan Hotel General Manager for providing the refreshments. Team Travelling to Bristol & Clifton for County Match Week , 22nd -26th June is: Liz Bird, Sarah Jane Boyd, Michelle Burgess, Micah Carroll, Samantha Giles, Nikki Hodge, Judy Ryder, Sarah Taylor, & Jan Teague. |
|
BRISTOL AND CLIFTON - SUNDAY, 17TH JUNE Samantha Giles with new Mascot “Aslan” 8 of the squad selected to play in County Match week from 22nd – 26th June went to Bristol and Clifton for a practice round. The pairings were: Judith Ryder & Micah Carroll, Jan Teaque with newcomer 14 year old Samantha Giles, Liz Bird & Nikki Hodge, and Sarah Taylor with Michelle Burgess. Unfortunately, the weather prevented some from finishing the round. The new Team Mascot is a furry lion named Aslan (after the Lion, the witch and the wardrobe) reflecting the lionhearted spirit of the Cornish Team! Cornwall reached the County Finals in 1995 when it was held at Bristol and Clifton – Judith Ryder is the sole member of the original team to be playing in County match week this year. Good Luck Everyone! |

COUNTY SQUAD PRACTICE – TEHIDY PARK – 25TH APRIL 16 players from the County Squad arrived to play a match against the Men but unfortunately Tehidy were unable to raise a team. PAIRINGS :-Judith Ryder & Samantha Giles v Sarah Taylor & Rachael Phillips (1st Team),Nikki Hodge & Micah Carroll v Liz Bird & Michelle Burgess (1st Team),Suzanne Courtney & Rebecca Lawler v Kirsty Hopkins & Lyn Saget, Jasmine Stopford & Sue Ofield v Rebecca Pitt & Jean Reed. The last group only played 9 holes as the older ones found the wind impossible to cope with! Sue was pleased to hear that two of the younger squad members have reduced their handicaps:-Rebecca Lawler by 2 from 14 – 12. Jasmine Stopford by 3 from 18 - 15. Also congratulations to Kirsty Hopkins on being accepted to a University in London of her choice, she has promised to come back to play for Cornwall. |

SWEWGA MEETING REPORT FROM - JENNY POTTER If any clubs have not received the EWGA handbook yet, let EWGA or Jenny Potter know. EWGA/EGU are holding a second meeting this week to discuss the possible merger. It is not expected to be a very quick process. Active/Inactive Handicaps. Initially EWGA had stated that those holding an Inactive handicap would not be able to play in a EWGA medal. They would now like to know what the members in clubs think. Should you be able to play in a EWGA medal with an Inactive handicap? If you have an opinion on this let your Club Delegate know and she can bring it to the Delegates meeting. The EWGA Trust is a charity that helps fund girls golf. They always need funds and this year is no exception. There is a fund raising competition that all clubs could enter. It is called “Trust Stableford Competition” .All a club need to do is allocate this to one of their Stablefords and the top ten scores points are multiplied by 2p and a donation of that amount gets sent to EWGA head office. There is a prize awarded at the EWGA AGM for the club that records the best total. This year the prize was a laptop. Details are on the EWGA website along with an entry form. Look under the EWGA Trust heading. Try and enter as it is a very worthwhile charity. You can always just make a donation to the EWGA Trust as any donation no matter how small is always appreciated. The SWEWGA Championships is being held at High Post, Wiltshire. If you fancy a few days away playing on a very nice course in July please enter. 14TH – 16TH JULY 2009 Details are on the EWGA website or in the Handbook page 151. |

COACHING DAY - CARLYON BAY - 28th March with MARK ROWE 18 Squad members with handicaps ranging from 2 to 14 turned out despite very cold north winds and showers. The main theme of the lesson was to help players understand the various ways to cope with different bunker shots, in particular the pot bunkers they might encounter during the championships which they had already met in the match against Staffordshire at Trevose. The second part of the session was devoted to chipping, whether it be a flop shot up and over a bank or a chip and run to keep it on track under the wind. This was followed by sandwiches in the club house and the option to play the short par three course or the main course or even go home if they were cold. Some people played the par three course and then returned for a session on the putting green others ventured out onto the main course but unfortunately it was too busy so they also ended up on the putting green, where Mark was more than pleased to give advice if asked. The squad camaraderie was really good and Mark said that he noticed a considerable amount of progress in some of the players. |

WITH JUDITH RYDER In fine conditions 17 Players including 5 juniors from the sqaud attended Judith's progamme of short game skills on the new practice area at Trevose. There were 6 challenges plus a rules area run by Sonia Harvey for correct dropping procedures. The players were selected in handicap order and out of 10 balls each were awarded points for balls on the green or target area and nearest the pin. The player with the most points at each station won that challenge and hole creating a match-play situation. The players continued to play 9 holes on the short course and then Sonia had a final Rules challenge in the Club house. Good day for everyone! Squad members: S.J. Boyd, L. Bird, N. Hodge, M. Carroll S. Taylor, J. Tatam, L. McCartney, S. Giles, B. Vann, R. Lawlor,C. Lopez, G. Hall. R. Phillips, R. Pitt, sorry I can't remember the rest. |

CLCGA AGM 2008 Report From Cynthia Penhale With dire warnings of wintry weather and possible delays on the roads, it was off to a new venue for the annual get together: still at Truro but to Killiow where it was possible to sit at ease in deep sofas or chairs to hear news of the past year. First item concerned a matter arising from last year about voting. It had been suggested that each club should have a certain number of votes but after discussion at the Delegates’ meeting early in the year, it was agreed that each individual was a fully paid up member and was entitled to a vote. Captain Jan Teague told us how the County team fared in the new format with all six south west counties playing each other over the course of a week. The championship was played in wild weather at Newquay but was a great success. The second team were winners in their inter county joust. Jacqueline Wheeler, Junior Organiser, was able to tell us of Micah Carroll’s wonderful year of golf being champion both in Cornwall and also the SW Region. Other girls are doing well too including Katie Rule whose score added to Micah’s gave the Team Trophy to Cornwall. Secretary Carol Ryder explained that Delegates had agreed that those wanting only to play the qualifying rounds in the Championship in order to contribute their scores for the Western Morning News Cup would be able so to do next year. She also expressed disappointment at the lack of interest in the Cornwall Golf Partnership meetings which had been arranged at several venues to enable everyone to attend without too much travelling. Treasurer Jill Simmons gave explanations regarding the accounts and that County Cards will be dealt with by CGU (that is the County men) next year. Jill also said that she will be finishing her stint as Treasurer at the end of 2009 and asked for a volunteer to take over. Veterans’ Captain Muriel Giles reported that Cornwall played all matches ‘away’ this year and though we didn’t win the shield, nearly all the matches finished very near the end of the round. Cornwall is now the organiser for the next two years and Jenny Hamilton will be the secretary. Wearing her other hat as SWEWGA Representative, Jacqueline Wheeler spoke of the new medal competitions that will be starting in 2009 whereby clubs can hold 24 medals per year and members can enter each one: no more alternative days: no more silver and bronze divisions. There will be only one winner from each club for the annual regional finals. Changes to some of the County Rules were all approved, followed by the election of officers. Sue Ofield (St Enodoc) was installed as Captain for the next two years and Jan handed over the badge of office and she in turn was given her Past Captain’s badge. Sue’s Vice-Captain is Jean Reed (Bude & N Cornwall) who had a badge pinned on her front too. Assistant Secretary Ann Fitzhenry was giving up her post and I volunteered to take over. I’m very pleased to be involved in County administration again but asked the assembled company to seriously consider volunteering to take a role as time is catching up with me. Trophies were then presented to winners of Vice Presidents’ Cup, Gammon Trophy and all the leagues with appropriate speeches of thanks in each case. This was followed by the dates for competitions for 2009 and the draw for the Gammon Trophy for which 18 clubs had entered. Under AOB, Chris Williams (Tehidy Park) informed everyone that as her club had won the Gammon Trophy this year, they had challenged Exeter G&CC, winners of Devon County Still Cup (a similar type of competition) to a match and suggested that this could be continued in succeeding years. Launceston asked for some clarification on rulings regarding abandoned matches in the Gammon and this will be discussed at the next Delegates’ meeting in January. Thus ended another AGM which had taken just under an hour. It was great to see all those friendly faces who expressed their pleasure in my return. We had a most enjoyable meal at Killiow and I caught up on all those little items of news that are so interesting. We did wonder if there should be a gossip column on the website – but thought better of it! Please keep supporting the competitions through the summer and also consider if you could get involved in some of the work of the County. It’s great fun!! (well, most of it). |

Cornwall Golf Partnership A Meeting was held at Carlyon Bay on 17th July at which it was agreed to go ahead with this and Clubs will be invited to a Forum later this year. County Golf
Partnerships (CGP) are an effective and structured way to support
the development of golf within a county. By the County Union and
Association working closely together with other appropriate
bodies (such as a County PGA) at county level knowledge,
experience, best practice and resources can be combined and
utilised. In addition a CGP will be better positioned to access
external funding from local organisations. The EGU and EWGA can
provide support in facilitating the creation of a CGP and in the
production and implementation of a county development plan. Click
