MIXED BETTER-BALL at CARLYON BAY GOLF CLUB on Sunday, 22^nd MAY

There were 14 girls and boys who took part in the mixed better-ball at Carlyon Bay. The boys mostly came from Carlyon Bay but a few from St.Austell made up the numbers. Sammy Giles' younger sister Megan has only just got a handicap but played very well with her partner Steven Waddell to win the Competition with 45 points, 2^nd were Sophie Tullett and Jake Stone - 44 pts and 3^rd place went to Abi Maude and Connor Warne - 42 pts. Other prizes: Girls: nearest the pin – Anna Clagett. Longest drive – Victoria Phillips. Boys: Nearest the pin – Jake Stone. Longest drive – Steven Waddell.

JUNIOR TRAINING

There have been several coaching sessions over the last 3 months with Johnathon Lamb at Tehidy and Richard Janes at St.Mellion covering all aspects of the game. Sonia Harvey has also given Rules sessions which concentrated mostly on dropping procedures.

HAMPSHIRE ROSE - NORTH HANTS G.C. SUNDAY, 8TH MAY

Sammy Giles (St. Mellion) played in this 36 holes scratch event and came joint 4^th with 2 rounds of 77. There were 61 players with handicaps ranging from plus 2 to 9 .

CHAMPIONSHIP, Mullion Golf Club, 19^th – 22^nd April 2011

6 girls entered the Ladies Championship at Mullion: Georgia Hall, Samantha Giles, Jasmin Stopford, Charlotte Brook, Emily Toy and Abi Maude. Sammy and Charlotte qualified in the top flight and Sammy broke the course record in the morning and was 2^nd best qualifier. She reached the semi-final against Katie Rule and only lost on the 18^th green in a thrilling match. Charlotte qualified 10^th and took Liz Bird to the 18^th in the 1^st round. She reached the semi-final of the advanced plate (1^st round losers). Georgia, Emily, Abi and Jasmin all qualified for the 2^nd flight which Georgia went on to win.

COACHING WITH RICHARD JANES at ST. MELLION GOLF CLUB on 12^TH MARCH

Richard Janes, the new head professional at St.Mellion, held the 1^st coaching day of the year. There were 6 sessions each demonstrating a skill. The 1^st was for short, mid and long irons which was followed by fairway woods and driver. After a break the sessions continued with pitching and chip and run with high chips followed by bunker shots. Finally the short game was ended by putting from 6 and 25 feet.

Each session finished with a competition of the skill with only 3 balls, awarding points to each player. The points were totalled making a winner of the overall skills. Eugenie Knight, a new member of Carlyon Bay, won a County Voucher for being best over the 6 skills.

DAILY EXPRESS ANDALUCIA UNDER 16 CHAMPIONSHIP

Sam Giles (St. Mellion) won the on the 1^st extra hole! She was 3 behind the leader going into the 4^th round but rallied and was tied after 72 holes. She nailed victory on the next hole! EWGA Report:

Cornwall’s Sammy Giles wins Andalucia title!

Cornwall’s Sammy Giles won a sudden death play-off to snatch victory in the girls’ event at the Andalucia Junior European Open in association with the Daily Express.

Sammy from St Mellion, defeated Poppy Finlay of Cheshire with a par three on the first extra hole at Finca Cortesin Golf Club in Spain. It was the first time the title had been decided in a play-off.

There was high drama as both girls came to the end of regulation play. Poppy, from Vicars Cross, looked odds on to win the competition but she drove out of bounds on the 18th and scored a desperately disappointing triple bogey eight.

Sammy meanwhile, hit a majestic approach in the last but thought she had to hole her 12-footer for victory - when in fact she had two for the title. She three-putted – and the two girls headed for the 10th and into extra time.

Sammy 16, has trained with the English Women’s Golf Association Super Birdies Squad and last year won the Cornwall girls’ championship.
